HIGH KIRK DUNOON

KIRKYARD and WATCH HOUSE

The churchyard, though only part of the original burial ground, has many interesting gravestones, some from the 13th and 17th centuries. The earliest grave is that of John Melville, Rector of the Parish from 1260.

In the church grounds there are the remains of a Watchhouse. Built around the turn of the 19th century, it is a grim reminder of the days when relatives found it necessary to guard the graves of their dead to prevent them from being robbed by unscrupulous "body-snatchers".
